Volunteering provides you with the opportunity to become involved in activities that contribute to the community and has many benefits including:

It takes place through not-for-profit organisations or government volunteer projects done by the volunteers own free will, without coercion and for no financial rewards. Though some organisations will offer reimbursement for volunteers "out of pocket" expenses.

People from all areas of the community including tradespeople, office workers, employed, unemployed, the young and the old, migrants, unskilled workers, disabled, airline pilots and brain surgeons.

- A safe work place (Equal Opportunity and Occupational Health and Safety Legislations apply to volunteers in the work place)
- Adequate supervision and support
- Appropriate tools including equipment, materials, space and appropriate training.
- Reasonable hours
- Not to be exploited
- Coffee, tea or spring water
- Reimbursement for expenses
- Appropriate orientation and training
- A Suitable job
- A job description
- To know how their job fits into the volunteer programme of the organisation
- Knowledge of the organisation and how it fits into the community service or third sector
- Job advancement
- Adequate insurance
- Freedom to change job if not satisfied

- Work to the job description as stated
- Dress appropriately
- Observe all rules and procedures of the organisatiton particularly in relation to safety, confidentiality, behaviour and extent of authority
- Attend orientation and training as offered
- Represent the organisation in an ethical and appropriate manner
- Observe all cultural "norms" i.e. team spirit, sharing of knowledge/information and avoid waste
- Gain clarity about the key functions or core business of the organisation and act accordingly
- Let the organisation know if you cannot fulfil an obligation
